Lyrics-string-along
iTunes shuffle. 5 songs. 1 sentence. Go. It was Friday afternoon in the middle of June, your face stripped of colour and it sucks that we didn’t keep in touch - stay there, I’ll be coming over, ‘cause I push a Lex and I rock a Rolex. Songs: Jam - Tribe Called Quest Passenger - Powderfinger Selfish - Slum Village Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap Deja Vu - Lord Tariq &...

Freelancers are not for free
Seems like when you add the word ‘freelancer’ to your job title, it causes the client to assume an automatic 50 percent deduction to your quoted price. Me: So the rate would be $XX p/hr. Client: Yeah, but you’re a freelancer, how about $X p/hr? Me: No, because I was paid $XXX p/hr when I was in a corporate job so you’re already getting a discount for my service.  This...

Damn you greener grass on the other side
My recent trip to Hong Kong and seeing all those analysts in suits has me toying up the idea of getting back to the corporate life and prancing around in my French-cuffed shirts made from Egyptian cotton again.  Yeah, I use to be one of those pretentious people working in an office with partners, where I would try to walk very fast and talk heaps of jargon. It had its upsides. Company credit...

I’ve never been discriminated for work until I...
The first time I visited Taipei, I immediately fell in love with this low-key city. The abundance of delicious foods, convenient transport, subtropical climate and helpful locals. I loved it so much that I spontaneously decided to ditch a very comfortable life in Australia to move to Taipei. I certainly don’t regret this decision and still highly-regard Taipei as a vibrant city. However, working...

I have severe anemia (iron deficiency) and recently have been put on a strict diet. Recently after some extensive research,  I find that if I was to follow this diet 100%, I basically wouldn’t be able to eat anything. Let me run through this diet with you in a nutshell. I’ll have to have food that’s high in iron, things like: - Meat (especially red meat) - Soy - Spinach -...

How to solve petty problems
Go for a midnight jog. Afterwards, step into a 7/11. Purchase a small bottle of orange juice and a bread roll. Take the two items to the next homeless person you see. Leave the two items beside him/her. You’ve just provided someone a decent breakfast for tomorrow, one less thing for them to think about. Now, what was your problem again? That’s what I did tonight and my petty problem...

On the spot
During Thanksgiving work lunch, I was put on the spot to ask three questions to a bunch of my colleagues. I’m the new girl, I’m also the youngest in the company. People expected to prove my worth from asking articulate questions. So what were my three best questions? 1. “Does anyone here play tennis? Because I’m looking for a tennis partner and it seems like you guys in...

Nothing ruins a jog than...
A dead body. Today I went for a jog in the rain, in the dark, into the unknown. I came across a small crowd in front of an abandoned-looking church. It was a mini, humble protest about something. I can’t read Chinese and I really wish I kept on jogging rather than to slow down and gawk. What I did notice was a dead body, lying there, covered with a few thin blankets and some palm leaves. ...

F yes.
Last night I was sobbing on some ghetto bench, getting attacked by mozzies and being marinated in some rancid city stench. Today I managed to score a second interview after just being interviewed; went Ikea shopping with future-landlord’s money and had some good sushis. Moral of the story? Weep your eyes out, look like crap and be a total stink, ‘cos come tomorrow it would all be...

Suck it up buster
I love hearing about other people’s rants. But it’s when I hear the same one from the same person over and over again is when I explode into this passive aggressive person who has nothing but sarcasm to offer. I just reckon you should do something about the situation if you find yourself passionately complaining about it for the third time. If you’re going to constantly complain...
